A Must have for all Moto Heads!

If you're like me you are constantly looking to discover new terrain and trails for your off-road pleasure. With more areas in danger of being closed I think it is important that we ban together all our resources and make sure everyone knows the proper riding areas where we can rip and have a good time at the same time also make note of the areas that we should stay off or away from due to noise complaints or other problems. This way we can all help keep off-road riding a growing sport and create good relations with other user groups and communities.

One of the best tools I have discovered lately is the GPS. Now these are not new however the new units have come along way and can help track areas and specific trails for people to pass onto one another so we can spend less time finding the right spot or specific trail and more time dialing in sweet single track.

I recently picked up a Garmin GPSMAP 60C and love it! It is not that the regular Legend is outdated or that you need color however what made my choice to spend a little extra came with the longer battery life and 3 times the memory so I can download more map area onto the unit and see where I am at.

For those of you who think that a GPS unit is going to be hard to figure out, let me demystify that rumor right now. You literally have to turn it on and away you go. There are a million features but like any gadget you will soon figure out what you need for your use and like a cell phone all the buttons and scroll features make perfect sense.

I am using my unit to map more areas for this site so we can up load a photo of the map and the trails that we have done. Like I said this is as easy as turning on the unit and making a track which you set to track at a time interval on the unit. If you find a cool lookout, swimming hole or fishing lake you can manually flag that point and you will never have to look for it again. The next time you visit that areas you can follow you GPS units directions to take you right back to that secret spot. Awesome!

Once you have your track or tracks from different areas you can download these onto your computer via the USB cable and overlay them onto a topo map. *The Topo Maps are purchased separately and are incredible. You will now have a 3-D review of your riding area and where you were along your ride. The unit will also tell you your average speed, max speed and distance with total accuracy.

If you want to get serious about your off-roading or just track your progress and time for fun a GPS is a perfect way to make your ride more valuble.
